Quick Tips on How to Eat Healthy at a Barbecue

The American Heart Association has a few general diet and lifestyle recommendations that everyone can easily follow and implement if you aren’t already doing so. Besides getting the proper amount of calories every day and drinking plenty of water, your focus should also be on regular physical activity and the types of food you are eating at each meal.

Consider adding more color to your plate by including different types of grilled veggies and fruits. Many of these taste even better when grilled because the heat helps caramelize the natural sugars within the fruits and vegetables.

Also try using whole-grain foods and meals with little-to-no saturated fats, added salts, or sugars. We also recommend adding Meatless Mondays and other sources of protein that you may not normally include in your home-cooked grilling meal rotation.

Maybe you can’t ever see yourself giving up the beef that you love, and while we’re definitely not saying to do that either, there are some tricks you can use to help find the healthiest cut of meat to grill up on your new premium grill or smoker. Popular cuts like–strip steak, tenderloin, and top sirloin–all are excellent choices for consuming a leaner beef. A general rule of thumb is to look for the words “round” or “loin” associated with a cut of beef. See those and you’ll know you’re getting cuts that are leaner than most of those available at the store or butcher.

And please, never be afraid to reach out to a medical professional to receive advice that can be more specifically catered to your own dietary needs and lifestyle.
